Leading Through Injury – Staying Present When You’re Sidelined

One thing I’ve always expected from my players is simple. If you get injured, you still turn up to training.

Even if you can’t run drills or make tackles, you’re still part of the team. You might help set up cones, talk through plays, or share what you notice from the sideline. You’re still adding value. You’re still showing commitment.

That same principle applies in leadership. There’ll be times when you’re not at your best. Maybe you’re worn down, juggling too much, or carrying the weight of something outside of work. The temptation is to pull back until you feel like yourself again.

But leadership isn’t about waiting for perfect conditions. You can still lead even when you’re not at full strength. Sometimes your most meaningful contribution is simply showing up and being steady for others.

When you do that, your team learns something powerful about resilience. They see that consistency matters more than comfort. They see that being present counts. And they’ll follow your example the next time things get tough for them too.

This week’s challenge:

If you’re struggling or running low on energy, don’t disappear. Be honest with your team. Offer encouragement. Stay connected. Even from the sideline, your leadership still makes a difference.
