Bench Strength – Building Future Leaders
As we head into the Christmas break, a lot of teams start easing off. The pace slows, projects wrap up, and everyone’s thinking about a bit of rest — and rightly so.
But while it’s important to pause, it’s also a great time to think about what comes next. Because leadership doesn’t stop when the office lights go off; it just shifts.
When I think about great teams, one thing always stands out — they build depth. Every player understands the game plan, not just the starters. The bench isn’t a group of backups; it’s part of the strategy. The best sides invest in the next group long before they’re needed.
Leadership works the same way. A strong team isn’t built on one or two key people. It’s built when everyone’s learning, growing, and ready to step up.
So as the year winds down, take a moment to think about your own “bench.” Who in your team could take on more next year? Who’s showing signs they’re ready for the next challenge? Use the quiet season to prepare your people for what’s ahead — even small development steps now will make a big difference later.
This week’s challenge: Before you clock out for the holidays, identify one person you can invest in next year. Send them a message, have a quick coffee, or share a bit of encouragement. Growth doesn’t always come from big moves; sometimes it starts with a simple conversation.
